Free Comic Book Day 2017!
One day a year, publishers and creators set aside the need to do business and in the spirit of the craft they give away works of art and stories crafted with care. No, this isn’t Christmas, it’s Free Comic Book Day! So I hope you got out there and had a good time like we did because the Motor City Geek crew made some miles this year. With five comic shops all over Metro Detroit under our belt, we came away as some very happy shoppers!
We started early at a small but friendly shop called Pieces and Pages in Livonia, which opened just a wee bit before the rest of the shops did. The early shop gets the worm or comic geek in this case. They had their own in-house Deadpool and everything!
Next on our list was a Free Comic Book day veteran, Green Brain Comics in Dearborn. They offered even more free comics for those that brought donations in the form of canned food, gently used books and old cell phones. Give-away drawings, a mini craft fair, and comic book artist Carolyn Nowak made Green Brain really stand out this year.
Big Ben’s Comix Oasis brought something big to the day for sure, some really big lines. With at least a hundred people in line, the wait was worth it. The large discounts all over the store on back issues made it a bargain hunter’s dream.
After the Oasis we headed to my weekly shop Detroit Comics. With the Locus award-winning author Saladin Ahmed in house signing copies of his new Black Bolt series, there was plenty of excitement. Add that with the DJ spinning music, the Heroes and Villians food truck and a kid’s costume contest and the small shop was a non-stop geek party.
Last but certainly not least on the list was Warp 9 Comics and Collectibles as they offered a whopping ten free comics to everyone who walked through the door. With fifty percent off back orders and Dew Magick Illustrations in the store it the only thing that brought me down was that the line wasn’t out the door. If you missed them this year, make sure to check them out soon. All in all it was a great day running around town and meeting amazing people. Motor City Geeks are everywhere, and a day like today just proves it. So kick back, relax and read your favorite comic.
